All photographers should have at least one prime lens, i.e. a lens of a fixed focal length, in thei kit bag. Prime lenses are notoriusly sharp and the image quality is simply superb. The technology in prime lenses is basic so they don't sufffer from light diffraction, pin cushioning and distortion like zoom lenses do.
